Traveller Medical Funding

Will you lose your life savings or struggle with a lifetime of debt when you face a medical crisis outside of Canada or your home province?

Did you know...?

  • The Canadian government will not pay for your medical bills outside of Canada, even if it's an emergency

  • Your home provincial healthcare plan may provide little to no coverage for your medical bills in other provinces

  • Hospitals and clinics in some countries have been known to refuse to treat patients even during emergencies, if the patient cannot provide the money up-front

Fearless and adventurous, Ellie spent her vacations backpacking around the world. Ellie lived her life according to an inspiration from St Augustine, “The world is a book, and those who do not travel read only a page”, and she was determined to read every page possible.

By the time Ellie was 34, she had already trekked through the indigenous villages of northern Vietnam, watched the sunrise at the Angkor Wat temples in Cambodia, wandered through the Grand Bazaar in Istanbul, hiked the Inca Trail to the lost city of Machu Picchu in Peru, and immersed herself in the rich traditions of Día de los Muertos in Oaxaca, Mexico.

However, Ellie’s days of exploration were almost cut short on a long weekend trip to Portland, Oregon, when a driver texting on his phone ran through a stop sign and smashed into Ellie’s car. Ellie suffered broken legs, serious head injuries, and severe bruising, and spent four days in intensive care. She required three surgeries, which included the placement of a titanium rod in her leg. Unfortunately, Ellie’s leg became infected and she required additional surgery to save her leg.

Two weeks later, Ellie was well enough to return home. The hospital presented Ellie with a bill for $318,000, but luckily, she had the Traveller Medical Funding program to cover all the costs.
